Students at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland, launch oikos, to promote sustainability in economics and management. They choose “oikos”, the ancient greek word for house and the root for both “ecology” and “economy”, to reflect their conviction that the two words are closely related – a conviction that still very much drives our work today.

oikos St. Gallen establishes the oikos Foundation to expand its academic programs and secure long-term support for its activities.

Students in Cologne, Prague, Stockholm, and Vienna establish oikos chapters at their universities and thereby kick-start the internationalization of the organization.

The introduction of the oikos PhD Fellowship Program offers outstanding PhD students a 3-year fellowship to write their PhD thesis on sustainability in economics or management, and to engage in oikos projects.

oikos launches the oikos FutureLab as its new annual flagship event to convene student members from all chapters together with alumni, faculty, advisors, and partners.

oikos grows to more than 40 chapters and over 1000 members at universities worldwide.
