oikos Witten/Herdecke is a community of students that is built on a common ideal: A global economy that puts Environmental Protection and Human Rights at its core.
We are connecting students and enabling them to link their study subjects and personal interests to the area of sustainability. We are working together to create formats, conferences, professional opportunities and a community of students that want to develop their own skills sets while working on causes they are passionate about, e.g. the global north-south divide, sustainable supply chains, the psychology of environmental communications, youth educational events – or movie nights, urban gardening workshops and cloth swap parties.
We are a platform for motivated students to develop their own programs and projects, to get in contact with professionals from their field of interest and to organize events for the broader community at Witten/Herdecke University and the general public in the German city of Witten. Additionally, we are partnering with several conference organizers to send chapter members as oikos representatives to networking and learning events in Germany and abroad.
We are strictly organized as a volunteer-based community without the need for hierarchical organization. Our current projects always reflect the interest of our members, who independently decide on the contents and goals in their respective project working groups. By organizing events like the annual oikos Winter School since more than a decade in such working groups we create a framework for students to raise funds, build connections to academic and economic experts, develop marketing strategies, organize conference events and practice public speaking.
oikos Witten/Herdecke is a legally independent non-profit-organization hosted at Witten/Herdecke University since 2005 and is open to students from all areas of study.
oikos Witten/Herdecke runs 7 projects annually:
