oikos Co-President Patricija Zizyte joined two panels as a speaker last month — one with HESI, and another with Sulitest & Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) — diving deep into the role of higher education in shaping a better future.
Patricija represented youth, students, and of course oikos International at the panel — and these are a few key messages she brought to the table:
🔹 We talk a lot about 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, but I wanted to remind everyone: 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆’𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆’𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀. Before we act, we need to build intrapersonal and interpersonal capacities — learning how to 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀, 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.
🔹 Students and faculty need 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 — and I don’t mean more buildings. I mean more 𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦.
🔹 Students who care about sustainability are already organizing, exploring, and learning. Support them. Fund them. Let them 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴.
And for those who aren’t there yet — meet them where they are. Help them find 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘴 or 𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘫𝘰𝘣𝘴 the world actually needs.
