What could our future look like in 2040 if the solutions available today to mitigate the climate crisis, which is already killing many people, were finally used? How can we quickly and massively reduce CO2 emissions in order to leave a world worth living in for future generations? The Australian actor and director Damon Gameau goes on a long journey in “2040 – We save the world!” To find answers to these pressing questions. He finds numerous promising change approaches and already available solutions that give hope.
According to his findings, living together on earth could be sustainably improved by 2040 if households produced their own energy in a smart way, if car traffic were massively restricted and space for parks, urban forests and urban farming became free. With forward-looking agro-ecological cultivation methods and through the renaturation of ecosystems, we could manage to massively reduce the CO2 content of the atmosphere and perhaps even prevent the karaoke crisis from escalating completely.
The prerequisite for this is that the pressure from the streets becomes so strong through even larger and more determined protests that the decision-makers in the corporate headquarters and government districts must finally act. 2019 was the year of school strikes. If we all want to live well in 2040, 2020 must be the year of mass strikes by adults.
“2040 – We save the world!” Celebrated its premiere at the Berlinale and can now be seen for the first time in Austria.

2019 millions of people – led by children and young people – managed the climate crisis caused by corporations and governments, which is already causing countless deaths, with school strikes and massive worldwide protests in many countries on the number one issue close. Nevertheless, the decision-makers continue as before. Adequate and just climate protection measures are still not available.
2020 is perhaps our last chance to achieve the climate change. Where are the strikes of the adults? They could create the economic pressure that can make the rich and powerful make concessions. What do we need to do to make the fundamental changes we need? What roles can students and universities play in this? How can research be promoted that deals with approaches to the necessary major social-ecological transformation that goes beyond existing systems?
Shall we study less and protest more in 2020? What can we do to make a future worth living? We will deal with these questions as part of Elevate The Campus. We cordially invite all students, university staff and interested parties to participate on the days before the Elevate Festival (4-8 March).
