Integrated Project: Track 4 – IBM

The Challenge:

Due to climate change, the frequency of natural disasters has quadrupled since 1970 and is estimated to affect around 1.7 billion people every year, leading to deaths, migration, and billions of dollars’ worth of damage. To address this issue, IBM is launching a virtual hackathon named “Call for Code”, that invites people from all over the world to develop innovative solutions to natural disasters, more specifically, ideas that improves disaster preparedness and relief. Although this event is open and accessible for anyone, participants in track 4 will solve this challenge with support from IBM from beginning to end.

The groups will learn how to use IBM cloud software technology, engage in design thinking, interact with field experts, and learn how to communicate and present their solutions. As a reward for the group with the best solution, the three members will get the opportunity to travel to IBM’s new IoT headquarter in Munich, Germany.

About the Integrated Project:

The Integrated Project is a new initiative by oikos Copenhagen aimed at facilitating collaboration between companies and ambitious students on solving sustainability challenges. It’s an opportunity for leading companies to find case-specific solutions for their issues as well as the possibility to get in touch with potential talent and for students to gain real-life experience within the field of sustainability.

There will be four tracks that are each hosted by a company that introduces a unique challenge, where students will try to solve the problem during four workshops over the span of two semesters. The content and structure of these workshops will vary depending on the track, but participants will gain new skills and knowledge that will help them solve the challenge before them. Once all workshops are completed, groups will present their solutions at a final event before a panel of judges, where one group from each track is declared the winner and receives an award.

There will be a total of 12 available participation seats in each track, where students from different universities around the Copenhagen area will be divided into four groups of three based on their experience and academic background. The duration of each workshop will on average last for around four hours and includes activities such as design thinking, interaction with project stakeholders, field trips, communication and presentation exercises, as well as feedback sessions.
