Economics as the ‘science of household economy’ and ecology as the ‘science of ecosystems’ have their common etymological root in the Greek word ‘oikos’. The name to shows the common origin and intersection between economy and the environment. With time, the field of interest grew to include topics surrounding social responsibility. oikos nowstands for collegiate commitment to economical, ecological and social sustainability.
Students at the University of Pennsylvania are honored to become a member of oikos International with the founding of oikos Penn in 2012. In line with oikos’s mission, oikos Penn promotes sustainability among the student population and supports the integration of sustainability issues into business and economics education while developing students' practical skills.
