Every year around the globe 1.3 billion tones of food is lost or wasted, that is a 1/3 of all the food produced for human consumption. This waste uses 1.4 billion hectares of farmland, 250 cubic kilometers of water and 3.3 billion tonnes of CO2.
We should remember that food is precious resource.
4600 calories of food are harvested for every person on the planet each day and only about 2000 is eaten, while 2600 is wasted. The food we waste could feed all of 870 million people starving worldwide.
