Welcome to the oikos-PRME Research Hub!
This is an online platform to share research on sustainability in economics, finance, and management among bachelor, master and PhD students worldwide.
Writing a thesis is an important milestone in our time as students. It is also a key element in our studies that we have significant influence on: choosing a thesis topic puts us in the driving seat in defining our own curricula! A growing number of students in economics, finance and management are making sustainability an integral pillar of their thesis. They are not only shaping their own research agenda, but are also providing important impulses and inspiration for others to move in that direction.
The oikos-PRME Research Hub is designed to support this dynamic by providing a platform to share finalized or ongoing research on sustainability in economics, finance and management, to explore what others are doing in the field – and to be informed, get involved and make a difference!

CSR 65.0 – Corporate Social Responsibility in an Aging Society
12 May 2018 | Theses |The world’s population is aging and growing daily. As health services improve and communities develop their economic and social infrastructures, infant mortality rates are declining, the population is becoming healthier, and life expectancy is increasing dramatically. According to the WHO, the number of people aged 60 years or older will increase from 900 million in 2015 to two billion in 2050, rising from 12% to 22% of the total global population (UN, 2015). The economic system is dominated by a key player – the business corporation, which is the most significant profit-driven entity in the economic system. Yet, it seems that with regard to aging, corporations fail to fully grasp the consequences of the coming demographic change, not... »
Climate Extremes, Space and Time: A comparative exploration of techniques to estimate the influence of climate on economic growth
12 May 2018 | Theses |This dissertation empirically estimates the impact of climate variables onto economic outcomes by expanding existing models in three dimensions: Climate Measures, Space and Time. First, a range of extreme climate and drought indicators are introduced into a global panel dataset to evaluate their influence onto annual country-level GDP per capita growth beyond annual averages of temperature. Second, to assess the value of increasing the frequency of measurement, the analysis is conducted quarterly rather than annually. Third, to avoid country-level aggregation, nightlight imagery is used as a proxy for local economic activity at a higher spatial resolution, allowing local climate impacts to be estimated. Results suggest that the addition of extreme weather indicators adds significant information to the econometric... »
Addressing sustainability and inequality at a global level : how other worlds (may) emerge
Increased global interconnectivity has encouraged a prevalence of forums that seek to organise and facilitate action on sustainability and inequality on a global scale. A body of work has examined such global forums and the theoretical contexts in which they operate but there is little which examines the nature of engagement through these forums to address issues of sustainability and inequality. This thesis explores social actors’ participation in two global forums, the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the World Social Forum (WSF), with the aim of creating more sustainable and equal worlds. It has been structured around four overarching research questions as follows. RQ1. What are the perceived relationships between dominant and dominated social actors in global sustainability... »
Social Responsibility in a Context of Globalization of the Markets: Comparative Study of Public Policies Articulation in the Pharmaceutical Industry of Brazil and Spain
Capitalist society faces one of its greatest challenges in the beginning of the millennium: How can sustainable social, economic and environmental development be reconciled with capitalist drivers of efficiency and generation of profits? With increasing international integration and pressure from financial markets, typical of the current neoliberal power model, it calls into question the extent to which corporations can make elections truly free in order to build a more responsible world. Furthermore, it is worth questioning whether it is possible to demand or even expect that states and governmental institutions participate and intervene more in society with increasing budgetary constraints and loss of autonomy. Based on these concerns about the role of corporations and about the validity of... »
Shale Gas and Hydraulic Fracturing: Risk and Opportunity Analysis for Oil and Gas Companies, Investors and The Future Energy Sector – Lessons from the US
The present Masters (MEng) thesis aims to analyse both qualitatively and quantitatively, the risks and opportunities arising from shale gas development in the US. The thesis draws upon multiple studies in order to identify the most prominent shale development impacts and most pressing risks. Through the literature review and Scopus database analysis, the thesis illustrates both the exponential rise in shale gas related research in the past few years and the fact that academic research has yet to catch up with the numerous challenges this industry poses. Next, risks are quantified at the company level, regional level and US wide level. A case study on shale gas development in Pennsylvania (PA) is illustrated through production, wastewater and shale... »
