Newsletter February 2021

Welcome to the February edition of our newsletter!

This month is full of action in the oikos Community as we’re making final preparations for the oikos Curriculum Academy which kicks-off this week. The LEAP and FutureLab teams are hard at work and the same goes to our friends from Carbon Literacy Project. We also have some exciting new projects on track like the oikos HOMEcoming Project and oikos Consultancy, which you can be a part of. Our Fundraising Team is also looking for new faces this month.

From our network we are happy to share with you the work of an enthusiastic member who translated the oikos Guide to Pluralist Economics to German. We also share an amazing opportunity from Youth4Climate with a trip to Milan later this year and the results of SOS International’s last year’s survey.

oikos HOMEcoming project

oikos is a student organization with an inspiring story and rich history spanning over three decades. No doubt that, looking at what oikos is today, the ‘original’ oikees from back in 1987 would be proud of what our little organization from St. Gallen has grown into and the community it created in its core. Over the years, thousands of students across multiple continents have been a part of oikos, helped shape it and constantly make it better and better. In that time, the world has undergone many changes, but this collective effort from our community remained a constant and is what makes us all proud to be a part of it.

And we think the best way to show our gratitude and pay respect to that effort is to immortalize it, through putting together scattered pieces of our amazing history and making it easily accessible to all oikees – future, past and present! We want it to inspire us to take more action, be creative and work together to fulfill the oikos Mission and Vision.

And for that we need you – active oikos members and alumni to work together to reconnect with our collective history, reorganize the archives and open them to the oikos world and take learnings from history for future action. The goal is to make it interactive and engaging, easy on the eye but with a clear structure and constantly evolving. If you’re interested in joining us, we’re happy to have you onboard! Write us an email at gregory.vrient@oikos-international.org titled “Homecoming – application”.

oikos Curriculum Academy Open Evenings

During the 3-day oikos International Academy 2021 (February 26 – 28),
students and early researchers will work together on the topic of “curriculum change” under the guidance of oikos International. The St.Gallen chapter, which is hosting the Academy this year, will draw on
the findings and organise four open input sessions and discussion rounds for the students of the University of St.Gallen (HSG) in the following week – the “Open Evenings”.
Open Evenings – Goals
The sessions focus on generating attention for the topic of sustainability at our university. On the one hand, the concrete goal is to initiate a dialogue among students as well as between students, faculties and the university administration. On the other hand, the long-term aim is to integrate sustainability topics into the compulsory curricula.
Open Evenings – Structure
In the week following the oikos International Academy, one session each evening (6pm – 7.30pm) will cover the following topics:
• March 01: Kick-Off – curriculum change from different perspectives
• March 02: Sustainability – the UN Sustainable Development Goals as a framework for positive change?
• March 03: Plural Economics – start your own learning journey
• March 04: Panel Discussion – curriculum change at HSG
