Experiencing the Reality of Sustainable Economics – The First Francophone Meeting

On Friday October 21st, the first oikos regional meeting entirely run in French kicked-off. Twenty-five members from the oikos French speaking Chapters gathered in the north of Brussels ready to debate and discuss the topic of sustainable economics with regards to consumption, energy and a more in depth look at the circular economy. Participants just had the opportunity to meet each other on this first day and talk about their local projects.

On the second day, the first full conference day, two interactive workshops were planned in the morning. The first was given by Mr. Francis Leboutte (Objectors de Croissance). Mr. Leboutte expressed why his institute believes it is not feasible to continue growing at the current level of aspiration. He also focused on energy consumption, presented data and a movie that showcases the idea of regrowth and its impact on the energy sector. The second workshop was given by Mr. Philippe Drouillon (Metamorphosis) who is also a professor at the ICHEC. Mr. Drouillon engaged participants in a very interactive learning methodology to raise awareness on the circular economy and its sub-concepts. It was also made clear that a circular economy does not necessarily mean it is also a sustainable economy. An exchange of ideas, and group work for the creation of sustainable circular economy alternatives, followed. A fully organic and home-cooked meal was then served to the 35 international and local participants. In the afternoon a tour around Brussels allowed participants to explore models of businesses that embrace the ‘bio’ or ‘sharing’ ideology. The tour also included a slow food degustation stop. A discussion was conducted by representatives from Zero-Waste Belgium to end the tour. The two representatives presented their habits, tools that can be used to contribute to a more sustainable economy and how to take small steps to walk the talk.  Once back at the conference room, a presentation on oikos, its structure and an oikos Q&A occurred. The day ended with a local dinner organized right on the main square at the very centre of Brussels.

On the final conference day, participants heard from Mr. David Petit who shared the work his NGO Bloom does. Boom focuses on a ‘community economy’, also embracing more sharing amongst families and decreasing the need for ownership and monetary exchange. A yoga session followed where participants stretched and learnt about inner sustainability. A walk around Brussels and a visit to a homeless centre, run in a sustainable way (including the cooking with wasted food), closed the first oikos Francophone Meeting.

Walking Towards More Sustainability In Economics and Management Education – #WalkTheTalk

The sixth oikos FutureLab was held at the Weiterbildungszentrum Holzweid (WBZ) of the University of St Gallen. Stakeholders from the oikos community gathered from all parts of the world for this event, to pursue the implementation of the oikos mission: integrating sustainability in economics and management education.

The theme for this year’s conference was #WalkTheTalk, catapulting words into action. Prior to the FutureLab, oikos Presidents met for oikos LEAP (our sustainable leadership program) where they honed their skills of decision-making and designed better action plans to #WalkTheTalk. After the Legislative Meeting on the 6th of November, oikos members gathered at the WBZ on 7th morning ready with their ideas, their motivation and passion to delve deeper into being in same terms as the oikos mission. While the participants tried being support chairs for each other in their break barrier session with Chris Taylor, the Alumni met up for chalking their future plans, and oikos partners met to exchange ideas for the future of oikos.

After a quick break session and a warm welcome to beat the weather, the much awaited session with Dr Antje Von Dewitz, CEO of Vaude, began. The session was also covered live on Facebook for everyone else to join us virtually who couldn’t in person. Antje expressed to the audience how one can be the entrepreneur they wish to be while walking hand in hand with sustainability. She shared her bigger than picture life story, about the challenges she faced while building up career, the many little wins and how being a go getter in life is exactly how one lives and walks their talk.

Post a scrumptious lunch, participants, partners and alumni spread over to workshops of their choice. The five workshops running in parallel to each other addressed five mega trends. At the climate change workshop, by Dominik Moesching, from myclimate, participants learnt about the different ways we could do our share in working towards the common goal of measuring sustainability. Dr. Bjorn Muller, from the ‘unschool’ Stride, headed the workshop on culture of knowledge and individualization, pushing his participants towards thinking out of the box. From the University of St. Gallen, Prof. Ivo Blohm and the oikos Associate, Christoph Rappitsch, took participants into the world of digital economy and its opportunities and impact on sustainability. While Lisa Futing from Audi Urban Solutions tackled the workshop on urbanization with her participants; Dr. Antje Von Dewitz and Lissi Reitschuster, CEO of Manemo, walked their talk in a workshop on working with purpose. The day winded towards an ending with a panel discussion where the workshops facilitators discussed the role of education with regards to sustainability together with the audience. The evening ended with dinner and lots of talk.

Day two started with equal amount of enthusiasm in a snowy St. Gallen. After an eventful ‘impact journey’ on the bus, participants attended the first session with Michael Gotz, CEO of YMCA Bavaria. Michael spoke about his experience and enlightened everyone with his #WalkTheTalk project in Germany on social sustainability. Post the first session everyone split up into their respective Learning Circles only to briefly meet for lunch and go back into working their wonders with the Learning Circle action session. After a very inspiring ‘Impact Fair’ the floor was kept open for sharing of ideas, thoughts, inspiration and motivation. Guests also participated in a “call for the future” where they wrote commitments for themselves and the year that is going to soon unfold. As the time to conclude the FutureLab came nearer, participants were left zapped with the FutureLab movie that was filmed during the course of the two days. Everyone walked away with smiles on their faces and motivation in their heart, towards the closing party.

The FutureLab 2016 ended with each and everyone promising to create a ripple and keep walking their talk or finally take a leap towards starting a journey where they would take their words into action.

Inspiring Better Leadership at the oikos LEAP Meeting 2016

On November 2nd, oikos LEAP Advanced participants arrived in a sunny Speicher, just into the Swiss Canton of Appenzell. Participants from the 2015/16 track (alumni) and from the upcoming 2016/17 track greeted Swinda and Tim, two professional coaches and facilitators that would guide them throughout the coming days in the beautiful eco-hotel.

The first day started with some personal development exercises, which included a cultural exchange to close the day. The second day invited participants to look back at their personal histories and engage in intense group work. The aim of this LEAP Advanced Meeting was in fact to prepare the basis for the 9-month long LEAP Advanced journey. The evening of the second day included somatics exercises and body learning. The final day entailed reflection walks, leadership awareness exercises and the division into peer to peer groups that participants will keep learning in for the next 9 months.

On November 4th a whole new group of chapter presidents walked into the, once again, sunny countryside. The first day started with some ice breakers on the field and then it was immediately ‘thinking and action time’. Participants created a common definition of sustainability through a collaborative process. They were then asked to think about organizational governance and how to improve belonging and processes. Many ideas were shared and many presentations were given to the group. The day ended with a self-development exercise that participants shared in smaller groups. All chapter videos, that will be featured on the Annual Report 2016 were screened in the evening.

The second day was entirely facilitated by our friends at euforia. Lili and Theo (also an oikos alumnus) started the day with some insightful exercises. They then directly presented four project management tools that participants used throughout the entire day to create ideas, put together actions plans and re-think their activities and strategies. Many presentations and debates occurred and participants filled the venue with their passion and willingness to make a difference. In the evening a sweets-sharing and cultural exchange was organized, whilst the movie ‘Before The Flood’ was screened.

On the final day our friend Chris, from GRLI, and our EB Member Anna facilitated a morning session on education. Participants identified gaps within our educational systems and discussed the potential for different methodologies of learning and educating responsible leaders. The morning ended with the generation of a presentation that the presidents would then take to the oikos FutureLab to encourage fellow members to keep walking their talk. The Meeting closed with a feedback and reflection round.

“Impact isn’t a journey for one, real change is achieved in collaboration with like minded people. LEAP taught me that a common goal is necessary to begin our journey together.” – Participant, LEAP Intermediate 2016, Canada

“LEAP Intermediate 2016 was a great event, where I had a chance to meet amazing, warm and bright young people. I think the uniqueness of oikos is its people, who share the same passion towards sustainability, and who have chosen the active stance towards achieving it. During LEAP Intermediate we were all working on different tasks, participating in discussions- I believe that made us close to each other. Indeed, what can be more inspiring than people who have great commitment level and believe in what they are doing?! During LEAP Intermediate, the atmosphere was fantastic thanks to all who were participating and organizing the event. After returning home, I felt a great energy and motivation boost. Thank you all who was part of creating it and make it a wonderful experience!” – Participant, LEAP Intermediate 2016, Finland

oikos Spring Meeting 2017

We drink, we eat, we drive; we consume ‘stuff’ the entire day. But mostly not in a sustainable way! That’s why consumption is a critical issue towards sustainable development and, therefore, better citizenship. The United Nations even included this aspect in their Sustainable Development Goals. We bring the oikos network together to share and facilitate knowledge across different local chapters in order to promote, inspire and enable future solutions for action on sustainable consumption.

In the next year (23.03.-26.03.2017) oikos Hamburg is hosting the oikos “Spring Meeting 2017”. Up to 140 international students will deal with the topic of sustainable consumption under the title:
USE YOUR POWER – Empowering Young Leaders for Sustainable Decisions

The Meeting contains of speeches, discussions and workshops. Additionally, we involve local firms and projects, which share their concepts of sustainable consumption. The aim of the conference is to increase the knowledge in the different areas of sustainable consumption as well as enhancing critical thinking and foster project experiences. Through this meeting, the participants will be more aware of their responsibility as informed consumers, sustainability conscious employees and future leaders. Thus, they will be empowered to make more sustainable decision in their private and work life.

+++ The 1. registration deadline is the 10. December 2016 +++
