oikos Members Pursue International Impact

On June 21st, 2015, three oikos members traveled to New York City with a bag full of aspirations and enthousiasm. Anita Negri, Julia Weber (oikos Vienna, COMMIT Manager) and Nikolay Ivanov (oikos Copenhagen, CBS PRME), first attended the GRLI Annual Meeting (June 21st and 22nd).

On the first day of the GRLI AGM, the oikos team met with Chris Taylor, the so-called, mentor of COMMIT. Chris has been involved in GRLI for a long time and is the key link in the cooperation between oikos and GRLI for COMMIT. He is also a a consultant at the Oasis School. This meeting served to revise and complete last-minute details for the workshop that the team would host on the second day of the GRLI AGM.

After an interesting introduction, a magnificent dinner was held next to the World Trade Center. Over dinner several interesting conversations were held which brought multiple perspectives together on how to advance cooperation between business and universities and how the educational systems around the world vary. The interest in COMMIT rose as well, as the vast presence of faculty was interested in understanding how we can truly make a step forward to achieving more responsible management education.

On the second day of the GRLI AGM, the COMMIT workshop was amongst the many workshops which were proposed. The workshop focused on asking challenging questions to the participants and making them realize the pressing need to change management education and our methodologies. With the use of several innovative methods, amongst which the collaboratory, the COMMIT workshop was named a success. The outcomes included commitments from professors and deans which will be soon published and an overall increase in awareness and understanding of the possibilities to further explore alternatives in teaching. The GRLI AGM closed with another magnificent dinner where like-minded people continued making plans and commitments to improve current educational systems.

On June 23rd the PRME Global Forum started. After the opening speeches, the first panel discussion took place. This panel also featured the oikos President, Anita Negri. By bringing a youth perspective on the need to change management education, Anita pointed out several points that she gathered throughout her work within, and outside, oikos. She highlighted the need for more collaboration, a true integration of sustainability and responsibility in all courses, an improvement in skills and values directed at students and more. Her interventions were very well received and sparked interesting discussions in the round tables that followed.

The first day was continued with another panel discussion and parallel workshops where participants got in touch with best practices and started new partnerships and projects.

The second day featured another workshop hosted by oikos and COMMIT: the student perspectives workshop. The organisers were delighted to see a full room for this workshop where, not only oikos and COMMIT were presented, but also student organizations from New Zealand, Brazil and Canada displayed their achievements and goals. Throughout the session groups were formed to discuss three topics: what changes are required in curricula, what changes are required in teaching and what changes are required in universities. Each team chose their preferred topic and each team was requested to present their findings in a creative manner. The session also featured some dancing to convey the message that education should include more fun!

The PRME Global Forum was concluded with a closing ceremony, a lot of smiles, achievements and positive outlooks for the future.

Re-defining Sustainability at the oikos Germany Meeting

oikos members gathered at the second oikos Germany Meeting (2015) and stirred up a discussion about definitions of sustainability. Set in Leipzig, the Germany Meeting was given the topic of “Re-thinking Sustainability”. More than 45 oikees from German speaking countries to explore views, attitudes and practices on individual approaches towards sustainability. oikos Leipzig prepared a two-day program full of interactive  sessions amongst oikees accompanied by wasted (and re-utilised) vegan food.

The Germany Meeting kicked-off on May 29th with a dinner, followed by an introductory talk by the oikos President, Anita Negri, recalling oikos values and spirit. The first lecture of the meeting was devoted to introducing debates in the sustainability field – an important start for the following day. The day finished with an open air networking session in front of the University of Leipzig.

Group work and presentations

On the second day, participants had the opportunity to widen their horizons and hold discussions on varied aspects of sustainability: from sustainable education to alternative means of transport to understanding co-operative food systems. An oikos member even taught members how to longboard. Almost all the sessions were prepared and delivered by oikos members who contributed to the content of the meeting with their different expertise. The second day ended with a group exercise workshop where all participants gathered and co-produced the definition of sustainability via a highly democratic, alternative methodology. The long Saturday finished in the biggest park in Leipzig where the dinner was served right from the grill.

On Sunday, the last day, the organizing team took the participant around Leipzig on bikes to see Leipzig’s urban gardens and to a place where some smart people are trying to question and rethink our current economic system.

The results were a lot of inspiring poster presentations and a definition of sustainability. We, however, cannot share this definition yet as it was not approved by 100% of the participants. The meeting was once again a great platform that enabled oikos members to connect, share, think their minds out and create a responsible future!

Sustainable University Day

The Sustainable University Day is the annual congress of the Sustainable Development at Universities Programme 2013-2016 (sd-universities programme). In 2015, it takes place for the second time.

Leaders in both the private and public sectors are facing increasing criticism from society. It looks for options of more effectively integrating the topic into academic education and asks about expectations from the private industry.

Finance Learning Circle Updates

The Finance Learning Circle

Finance is at the core of sustainability – or lack thereof. Capital flows are a key factor in the development of our societies. Ensuring that they reflect long-term economic, social and environmental criteria is critical. As a result, what is being taught in finance classes and the research that is developed in finance institutes is a big deal. Making sustainability an integral part of this is essential. We – a group of oikos members and alumni – want to contribute towards reaching this goal.

Our session at the FutureLab will focus on the integration of sustainability in finance and on how to promote such integration in teaching and research of finance schools. We will take a deep dive into two specific topics within this broader field: the integration of sustainability criteria into investments, and the relationship between commodity markets and sustainability. We will prepare initial insights on these two topics to discuss with the participants. We will also have two external speakers from RobecoSAM and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to provide further background. And we then want to use this basis to identify leverage points for change at our universities and to develop at least three oikos projects to promote the integration of sustainability into finance education and research in 2015.

What we aim to come up with at the FutureLab shall be another milestone in what will certainly be a longer journey towards making sustainability an integral part of finance education and research. Fashion (Supply Chain) Learning Circle Updates

The Fashion/Supply Chain Learning Circle 

Fair fashion, sustainable shirts and organic underpants – that is what we want. But what changes need to be pushed on in order to achieve a more sustainable product? What steps within the fashion supply chain are concerned? And in what ways can oikos impact on this transformation towards more sustainability?

Through a co-operation of oikos Maastricht and oikos Reutlingen this Learning Circle was brought to life, to answer those questions. We started of with a research for current models of the fashion supply chain in order to be able to identify the most important stakeholders and/or multipliers. Additionally traditional and new challenges of the fashion industry were defined. To this theoretical basis sustainable fashion expert Enrico Rima added years of experience in the business how changes can effectively be brought forward.

Within the Fashion Learning Cirlce we aim at creating an action kit for each of our participants’ chapters to reach stakeholders and accelerate change. Whether or not there have been projects in your chapter before, we will look for new ways and get inspired.
